TIM BRATCHEL MEMORIAL GALA

Well done to all the swimmers who took part in the Tim Bratchel Memorial Gala on Saturday : Southwold won by miles, winning 30 out of the 36 races and retaining the Trophy for the second year in a row.  The other clubs competing were Wells, Burnham, Bishopsworth and Bristol Penguins.

All the other clubs had two or three good swimmers in each age group. Only Southwold showed no weak links at all with strength in depth across all our teams. This was most evident in the 10 and under girls where races were close over the first two legs but we pulled away over the final two. Excellent third legs were seen from Abbie Matthews (back) and Abigail Butters (front crawl).

Georgie Locke looked in fine form as did Henry Bennett who took two metres out of Bishopworth’s Kye Adams in the final leg of the 14 and under fly race to win on the touch. It was great to see Livi Fry and Becca Lowther both back competing for the club and you could not miss Arno Turner – he seemed to be in every race, finishing out of first place just once, doubling up over the 12 and under and 14 and under teams.

A favourite moment was the Open mixed medley relay where we had 13 year old Beth Cox on last leg with a big lead but stood on the blocks between some much bigger and more powerful men – not who she would normally race against! They ate into that lead but only by a metre or two – another win!

The final race was the 8 x 50m cannon. Returning hero Jacob Graham was on last leg and with a lead of nearly a length, there was only ever going to be one winner.

Thanks to Bristol Penguins for a fun event to close the team season. We can look forward to going for a hat-trick in 2015.
