Southern Junior League - Round 1 Report

A slightly disappointing start to our 2014 campaign, firstly having to travel to the Link Centre in Swindon and then coming in fifth place out of six ahead of only Corsham but just ten points out of third.

Having said that, we recorded three individual race wins: Joshua Holloway (11) and Morgan Creed (12) both in the breaststroke and Sam Fry (10) in the backstroke.

We also won two of the medley relay races:

  • 10 year old girls – Lily Clarke, Melissa Dale, Abigail Matthews & Jessica Hawkins

  • 12 year old boys – which was impressive as both Josh Holloway and Dan Harding were swimming up a year group alongside Matthew Reeves and James Webb

The event did provide great experience for our young nine year olds, representing the club for the first time:

  • Girls – Maddy Cheeseman, Charlotte Osburn, Charlie Bliss & Cara Bates

  • Boys – Theo Fitzhugh, Ben Holloway, Oliver Thornell & Will Paget

They all survived the deafening noise during the final cannon relay and were commended by our team manager for their excellent behaviour and being in the right place at the right time, which is never easy in such a tight venue. They can take particular pride in their performances in the freestyle relays where the boys came second and the girls finished third. Well done!

The Fly races at 50 metres proved too tough unsurprisingly. These events have been just one length in recent years, which seems right for 9 year olds.

Gala 2 in the SJL is 31 May so we have some time to work on those Fly techniques and the good news is that we are likely to be back in Bristol at Horfield so lets hope for even more good swimms.

Well done and thank you to everyone for swimming so enthusiastically for the club.
