Southern Junior League 2014 gala 3 report

The league concluded with a trip to GL1 this weekend which is certainly closer than Dorchester! We only had three other clubs to compete against on the night. The overall event is run as a virtual gala so our times are entered into a database alongside all other clubs competing and a winner emerges. Southwold was in 17th place going into this final gala.

On the evening there were some excellent swims from Southwold. We placed first in 26 of the 49 events and showed good strength in depth by winning 10 of the 17 relays. James Webb’s final length to win the cannon relay from a long way behind was something to behold; he looked turbo-charged.

James also won both his individual events with great early-season PBs. Josh Holloway improved his breaststroke PB by over a second and a half and won both the 11 and 12 year old races. Jess Hawkins saw a big step forward with her 50 back time and the biggest PB of the evening by far was for Charlie Bliss in the 50 metres breaststroke – 8.48 seconds. Wow!

Despite the last-minute arrangements from the organisers, this event provides great competition experience for many of our younger swimmers, especially when racing at GL1 where our county championships take place each year. Times are already posted on Hy-Tek. Thanks to all the coaches, swimmers and parents for your support.
