Report - Newport Christmas Cracker 2013

The longest day! Arriving at 7.10 am in Newport on a Sunday in December to see parents queuing outside the leisure centre door never ceases to amaze me as to the dedication required of not just swimmers but their families.

This has always been a popular event with Southwold’s younger swimmers and word seems to have spread across Wales and the West as the event was doubly over-subscribed. This led to several changes in scheduling by the organisers and unsurprisingly a number of drop-outs from amongst our swimmers.

Two of our younger members were there for the whole 12 plus hours though, competing in the IM events on the evening as well as the 50s during the day. Really well done to 9 year old Abbie Matthews and Sophie Noble who were rewarded with 9 new personal bests (PBs) between them!

In the 11 year old girls events, Jess Swales achieved 2 PBs and Skye Jee 3, including a top ten finish in the freestyle. Georgie Lloyd carried the flag for our more experienced swimmers and was rewarded with 3 new best times.

The Burney family were much in evidence with 3 PBs for Tom and 2 for 8 year old Grace. Both looked particularly strong in the freestyle.

Dan Harding had the best day amongst our swimmers. He came 4th in the 10 year old boys breast stroke and won silver medals in his other 3 events, all in PBs including a County qualifying time in the 50 fly.

A special mention must go to all our coaches, team managers, officials and parents who arrived in the dark and left in the dark. Particularly Garry and Helen Rogers who were there all day with no children a big THANK YOU.
