Gloucester Open report

33 Southwold swimmers headed to the Gloucester GL1 Pool for the first of the main autumn open meets. From the younger swimmers to the most experienced the club had an outstanding weekend with over 100 new PB’s 57 top 3 medals and 10 new club records.

Friday evening kicked off with the less popular Girls 800m and Boys 1500m events, all the Southwold swims earned Pb’s with Georgie Lloyd leading the way with a 49.27sec improvement.

Saturday and Sunday were the more popular days with several younger swimmers gaining valuable experience swimming events for the first time in an Open Meet competition. All the younger swimmers swam well with Abigail Butters securing a silver medal for the 100m Fly and several other swimmers only just outside the medal positions. Jess Hawkins had PB’s and top 8 finishes in all 6 events with a massive 20 seconds improvement in the 200 back.

The more experienced swimmers performed well too with many achieving medal positions (Top Three) in their events. Leading the medal table  for the boys were James Webb (8); Ben Rawlins (7); Aidan Loughnane (6) and Henry Bennett (5), amongst the top girls were Beth Cox (6) Georgie Locke (4) and Emily Locke (4).

James continued his recent assault on the clubs 12 year old records improving the 50, 100, 200 and 400 free times plus the 200 Breast and 200IM . Henry also improved the 13 old 200 IM, Back and Fly records.

But the weekends honours went to Maria Jones who achieved a clean sweep of Gold from all her 8 events; she was awarded Top 15year old Girl for the meet and only missed out on overall Top Girl by 4 points.

Well done to all those who swam and thank you to all the coaches and volunteers who were there to support our swimmers or act as Meet Officials.
