County Championships 2014 – team relays report

The final day of the County Championships is always the relays which combine some serious racing with an overall end of term, festive feel. The tone for the day was set with boys warming up in female racing costumes (brave!) and there were all manner of costumes, onesies and much face paint on display.

Morning session

It was rewarding for coaches and parents alike to see our club represented in all ten morning finals. Every team who completed a final won a medal. Southwold’s results were:

The highlight was clearly our 13/14 year old girls with our only trip to the podium of the morning. Maria Jones was well set up for the glorious final leg by Sophie Wilkins and the amazing Locke sisters, Emily and Georgie. Maria still had work to do but it was no surprise to see her reach out one of those long arms on the last stroke and sneak third.

Honorary mentions must go to:

·        Neil Holloway who pushed himself through three 100 metre fly races over the course of the weekend

·        Arno Turner who just seems to be getting faster and faster

·        Young Billy Boulton, Finnian Lingham and Tom Burney who had not competed in the individual championships but swam with real gusto for their teams and can now proudly wear their County teams freestyle medals

·        All the 9/10 B team (Brandon Creed, Kyle Kirkpatrick, Cody Farrell & Johnathan Newman) who enjoyed a surprise swim in their medley final, only to be denied a medal by a heart-breaking DQ. Next year for sure, lads.

The 13/14 year old boys (Ben Rawlins, Henry, Aidan and Jon Lowther) followed the 13/14 girls lead with a bronze in the medley. The freestyle looked a bigger challenge when a 3 second PB still left the team qualifying for the final 4th fastest. 4 sub 29 second swims later and a further ½ second PB saw the lads back on the podium collecting their second bronze medal of the day.

Elsewhere:

·          The 15/16-year-old boys (Matt Harraway, Peter Rogers, Ben Newman, and George Boulton), came 4th in both finals.

·          The 9/10 girls team (Lily Clarke, Abigail Butters, Millie Burton, Millie, Abbie Matthews) swam 7 and 4 second PB’s in their races.

·          Morgan, Skye, Thea and Georgie Lloyd medalled in both their events.

Special thanks go to the officials, coaches and team managers, a number who were there for the whole day.
